My supervision is grounded in contextual behavioral science and focuses on fostering psychological flexibility in clinicians. Alongside case conceptualization and clinical skills, we can pay attention to uncertainty, self-doubt, avoidance, rigidity, professional identity, and the other very normal things that show up while learning this work.
I also draw loosely from developmental models of supervision, recognizing that the challenges clinicians face tend to change as experience, autonomy, and confidence grow.

What You Need to Get Your LPC
How long does it take to get my LPC once I’m an LPCA?
The supervised post-master’s period must last at least 2 years.
Do I need a certain number of work hours during this time?
Yes. You need at least 1,500 total post-master’s hours. Of those, at least 1,380 hours must be direct counseling client contact.
How does supervision work during those 2 years?
You need 120 total supervision hours. At least 60 hours must be individual or triadic supervision. The remaining 60 may also be individual/triadic, or they may include group supervision—group supervision is not required. Keep your own supervision log current throughout the two years rather than trying to reconstruct your hours at the end.
What do individual, triadic, and group supervision actually mean?
Individual supervision is you and your supervisor. Triadic supervision is two supervisees with one supervisor. For the 60-hour minimum, individual and triadic supervision count toward the same requirement. Group supervision may include no more than 6 supervisees and is scheduled for at least 2 hours.
What do I need to keep track of along the way?
Keep an ongoing record of your supervision dates and hours using the Board supervision log. If you change supervisors, complete the required confirmation paperwork and obtain approval of the new supervision plan before accruing hours under the new supervisor.

What You Need to Get Your LPC/S
When can I apply to become an LPC/S?
If you do not hold a doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision, you need at least 5 years of continuous clinical experience immediately preceding your application.
What is supervision-of-supervision?
You complete 36 hours of individual/triadic supervision with a Board-licensed LPC Supervisor or other qualified mental health professional while they critique and supervise your work as a supervisor candidate.
How long does the supervisor-candidate period take?
The 36 hours of supervised supervision must occur over no fewer than 2 years.
How many LPCAs do I need to supervise?
You must supervise at least 2 LPCAs and no more than 6 LPCAs during the supervised-supervision period.
Do I need to take a supervision course?
Yes. Unless you qualify through the doctoral-degree pathway, you need at least 3 graduate semester hours of study in supervision or 45 hours of Board-approved courses or training in supervision. Do I need to see both supervisees all the way through to their licensure?
Actually, no! The Board materials require you to supervise at least 2 and no more than 6 LPCAs during your supervised-supervision period; they do not state that those LPCAs must remain with you through their eventual LPC licensure.
What paperwork should I keep?
Use the Board’s Supervisor Candidate Confirmation of Hours form to document the 36 hours and the associates you supervise, then submit the required LPC Supervisor application and supporting documentation when you are ready to apply.

North Dakota: LAPC → LPC
What You Need to Get Your LPC
Start here: In North Dakota, the first step after the LAPC is advancement to LPC. The LPCC is a separate clinical credential with additional requirements beyond the LPC pathway.
How long does it take to get my LPC once I’m an LAPC?
The LAPC supervised-experience period is 24 months. Supervision must continue through the expiration date of the LAPC even if you complete the minimum supervision hours earlier.
How many client-contact hours do I need?
You need at least 200 direct client-contact hours in each year, for at least 400 direct client-contact hours across the two-year period.
Are there requirements for the clients I see?
Yes. Each year you need contact with at least 10 separate clients, with at least 5 individual clients. The remaining contacts may be individual or group clients; an ongoing group counts as one client.
How does supervision work during those two years?
You need 100 total supervision hours, with at least 60 hours of individual, face-to-face supervision. Group supervision may be used for the remainder. Supervision should occur at regular intervals throughout the 24-month LAPC period.
What should I keep track of?
Keep your supervision record current as you go. If you have more than one supervisor, a separate set of supervision forms is needed for each supervisor. If your supervision plan changes, notify the Board in writing and obtain its decision on the change.
When do I apply for the LPC?
The application instructions say to submit the LPC application no sooner than six weeks before your LAPC expires. The LPC does not become effective until the LAPC expiration date.

What You Need to Get Your LPCC
LPCC is the advanced clinical credential. It is not simply the next automatic step after the LAPC period. The LPCC application sets out a separate, more advanced set of education, clinical training, supervised clinical work, supervision, recommendation, and examination requirements.
What makes the LPCC different from the LPC?
The LPCC application is specifically focused on clinical counseling and requires additional clinical education and documented clinical experience beyond the LAPC → LPC requirements.
How much post-master’s clinical experience do I need?
The application requires 2 years / 3,000 hours of supervised clinical counseling work experience.
Is there an exam requirement?
Yes. The LPCC application requires a passing score on the NCMHCE.
Do I need recommendations?
Yes. The application calls for a recommendation from the clinical professional who provided your direct supervision plus two additional professionals familiar with your clinical experience.
